Kijevo,
Croatia
The village of Kijevo is located in southern Croatia, approximately ten miles southeast of the city of Knin. It consists of a number of scattered hamlets in a rocky Dalmatian mountain range, and was named after a nearby Kozjak's peak. The name is found in writings dating back to
14th century.
In 1991 Kijevo was totally robbed, mined and burned by the Serbian occupational forces. On August 5, 1995 the Croatian army, in operation "Storm", liberated the village but the inhabitants could not return for all their homes were demolished, as well as the church of Saint Michael.
Ahead is the toilsome task of rebuilding the village and the church. Inhabitants of Kijevo hope that by using their own resources, and with help from people of good will, their violently extinguished hearths will flare again with a new fire of life.
